From Good Airports to the World’s Favorite Airports

By: Manoj B

Months after Skytrax’s 2007 survey voted the Hong Kong International Airport as the best airport in the world, Tripadvisor’s recent survey results endorsed the Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport as the world’s favorite airport. Interestingly, for both surveys, the second place was jointly awarded to two airports. While Skytrax’s runners up was jointly awarded to Seoul Incheon and Singapore Changi airports, in Tripadvisor’s survey, Las Vegas McCarran and Orlando International tied as second favorite.

So, what makes these airports stand out from the rest? Going by general perceptions and patterns, it’s not a tough guess. Travelers appreciate airports that are easy to navigate, i.e. an airport, which has proper signage and offers a simple exit. Moreover, travelers want to go through security quickly and with ease. Other important factors worth considering are terminal cleanliness, staff efficiency and courtesy, shopping, dining options, internet services, security processing and immigration waiting times.

Passengers spend a lot of time at hub airports. Suppose you’re flying from San Francisco to Madrid with United Airlines on the first leg and Lufthansa on the second. Most probably, you’ll have a layover of around 2 hours at Frankfurt for your connecting Lufthansa flight to Madrid. During this period, most travelers look for restaurants, internet access, shopping, etc. Also, you have plenty of time to notice how clean the washrooms are, how much seating is available, the cost of food and beverages at the outlets, how efficient and helpful the airport staff is and much more.

Airports need to be more tuned to the needs and concerns of air travelers worldwide. It’s not about winning a “best” title, but providing a better experience to millions of passengers worldwide.
