Warm Up America Foundation How Can I Help

By: Rob Parker

Are you a person who loves to knit or crochet nice sweaters or blankets? Do you find that every year you produce dozens of hand made items, but you don’t really have enough people to give them all away to? Lots of hobby quilters, knitters and crocheters would happily create something new whenever possible, but the fact is that sooner or later their creation becomes impractical; there is no one with room left in their closet!

A much darker reality for those that love to knit and crochet is that sometimes, the people we create these gifts for simply do not appreciate them. Let’s face it; we live in a world where brand name power rules and the favourite homemade sweater is in many case a thing of the past.

The good news for busy knitters and those looking for someone who will truly appreciate what they make, is that there is a way to get your creations into the hands, and on the bodies, of people who really need it. Every year all over North America people live without shelter or adequate clothing to keep them comfortable when the weather gets colder, and Warm Up America is a foundation that has been started specifically to unite knitters with people in need.

Evie Rosen, a knitting teacher and a yarn distributor, created Warm Up America in 1992. It called upon knitters to volunteer their skills in order to keep the homeless warm. The Foundation has grown substantially since it was created and annually hands out thousands of items of clothing as well as blankets to needy people in shelters, refuges, and on the streets all across the country.

Of course as a charitable organization the Warm Up America Foundation relies on volunteers to turn the vision into reality each year. There are several ways in which you can help:

At the very basic level, you can commit to knitting a 7” x 9” rectangle, which will become a part of an afghan blanket.
You can provide knit caps, sweaters, socks or anything else to one of the Foundation’s many annual initiatives.
Contributions in the form of cash donations are always welcome.
As a grass roots organization, Warm Up America has community initiative at its heart. This means that local volunteers are needed in order to fire up quilting and knitting networks in their communities to help out this great cause!

Warm Up America also makes use of those who want to become involved even without knitting skills. These volunteers can aid with the distribution of the products as well as some of the other tasks involved in the creation of the afghans, beyond the actual knitting or crocheting.
